Public Law 94-142, also known as the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) is legislation that was passed to ensure all students with disabilities ages 3-21 would receive a free and appropriate public education to meet their individual and unique learning needs.
We believe that all students can learn. We provide special education students with equal access to regular education programs and facilities. Decisions regarding programs and placement are based on what is best for the student and provided within the school of attendance whenever possible. Special education students are taught in the least restrictive environment by qualified staff utilizing individualized methods and materials reflecting best practices. Diagnostic and support services should be made available to students in a manner which is non- discriminatory and recognizes the individual needs and differences of children, their families, their culture, and the community in which they live.
The Special Education Referral Process
If a parent has concerns about their child’s academic or social emotional progress, as it relates to education, they should contact their child’s building administration. The school’s team of diagnostic, educational, and administrative professionals will follow a process to determine if a student is eligible to receive special education services. Please consult the following websites for comprehensive information regarding the Special Education and Response to Intervention(RtI) process:
Continuum of Services
School District 308 offers special education services for students age 3 to 21(inclusive). Most special education services are provided in the student’s home school. In the event that a student’s needs may be more significant, they may attend school in one of the other District 308 school buildings, or services may be contracted from outside of the district. Transportation will be provided when students eligible for Special Education attend a school other than their home school. Each school provides Resource support for students who are eligible for that level of special education services.
