Full-Day Kindergarten
The parents of 360 incoming District 308 kindergartners have the opportunity to send their children to the second year of the district’s full-day kindergarten pilot program.
The voluntary, pilot program will once again allow students from throughout the district to join their peers at Southbury Elementary School from 8:50 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. for the full-day program.
However, a recent evaluation of the program suggested a change for the upcoming school year. Transportation will now be provided to families participating in the volunteer program.
The full-day kindergarten will serve 360 students: 215 general classroom students and 145 students designated as at-risk who will receive personal invitations to participate in the expanded program. STudents At-Risk (STAR) also includes participants from the district’s English Language Learner and Dual Language programs. Fees for the program are $250 for students chosen through the lottery and $31 for STAR students invited to participate in the program. The number of students selected through the lottery per school, is determined by each school’s enrollment.
Informational meetings are held in the spring at central locations throughout the district. Families considering the all-day option are encouraged to attend. The meetings review the all-day kindergarten registration process, as well as provide detailed information on the new program.
