Message from the Principal
One of the biggest things that we are focused on for the 2009-2010 school year, is to get as many of the families involved in the everyday activities at Southbury Elementary school.

Veterans Day Assembly
October 19, 2009
Greetings Southbury Families! We are very excited to announce that Southbury will be celebrating Veterans Day by having a special breakfast & assembly at the school on November 11th.
According to Wikipedia, “Veterans Day is an American holiday honoring military veterans. Both a federal holiday and a state holiday in all states, it's always celebrated on November 11th each year. However, if it occurs on a Sunday then the following Monday is designated for holiday leave, and if it occurs Saturday then either Saturday or Friday may be so designated. It is also celebrated as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world, falling on November 11, the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.)”
How Can You Help
We are sending home four postcards with the oldest child in the school (also attached to this story in PDF). We would love for you to hand out all four of these to veterans that you know so that they will feel invited to come to Southbury on November 11th at 9:00 AM for breakfast, as well as an assembly at 9:45. The postcard explains how they can RSVP, and also provides a set of directions on the flip side. This event is for the Veterans and children only, and not for our entire Southbury community. If you have a Veteran as a neighbor, family member, or friend, feel free to invite them. They do not have to live in Oswego (there are no boundaries). The event will only take place for about 1 hour and we want to honor each Veteran individually. Thank you for your help.
