Principal's Letter June 2012
June 5, 2012
Dear Prairie Point Parents:
I can’t believe it’s time to write my last letter of the school year. Each year goes by so fast. I always love looking back this year on all of our accomplishments.
Eudora Welty said that “Leaning stamps you with its moments. Childhood’s learning is made up of moments. It isn’t steady. It’s a pulse.” As the school year ends, you may want to talk with your child. Ask him or her, “What’s been your most remarkable moment this year?” “What is your favorite memory?” “What did you like best about your class?” “Who was your best friend and why?” You might want to write their answers down in a memory book or in the cover pages of the yearbook in order to create a lasting memory.
We always encourage reading over the summer. Here’s some fun activities you can do at home.
Check out Summer Reading programs. There are several in the area at the public libraries and at Barnes and Noble.
Set a goal and graph his or her success! Challenge your child to read independently this summer. Help your child set a goal for how many books he or she will read, and then use the chart at the end of this newsletter to graph the success.
Keep reading aloud. Reading aloud benefits all children. One benefit is that you can read books your child can’t, so he or she will build listening comprehension skills if you read aloud books a year or two above their level. This will increase your child’s knowledge and expand experiences with text.
We wish you a wonderful summer with your kids. We will see you in August!
