Oswego District 308 Secondary Science

Philosophy and Goals

We believe that active engagement in curricula designed to explore natural and physical phenomena fosters growth in the ability to ask questions and seek answers. We believe this ability is critical to each student’s educational and personal growth.

The District 308 Science program is designed to give students the academic background and skills to become scientifically literate citizens who can function successfully in an increasingly complex, technologically changing world. Acquiring science concepts and skills will provide students with the opportunity to use appropriate scientific processes and principles in personal and public decision making.

Guided by the philosophy above, the science program has outlined the following essential processes and skills for all students.

Essential Processes and Skills in Science

  • Predict changes using evidence, models, and explanation.
  • Recognize and investigate problems by formulating and proposing solutions supported by reason and evidence.
  • Interpret information and ideas derived from thinking critically about investigations.
  • Analyze concepts and investigations using measurement and mathematics.
  • Access information, process ideas and communicate results using appropriate laboratory and technological instruments.
  • Recognize and apply connections between information and ideas within the disciplines of science to those in daily life.
  • Comprehend and analyze scientific discourse.
