Clubs and Activities

Academic Decathlon*

This is a ten-event competition.  Every team member competes in mathematics, science, economics, social science, language and literature, fine arts, prepared and impromptu speech, interview, essay and superquiz.  Each team is made up of three honor students, three scholastic students, and three varsity students, by GPA; honor (3.75-4), scholastic (3-3.75), varsity (0-2.99).  Sponsor:  Stephanie Scapino, 630-636-2388.

 

Art Club

You do not have to take an art class or be an artist to join Art Club; everyone is welcome.  Art Club members share art-related ideas, promote skills in the arts, create artwork, and bring art into the school and community.  Sponsor:  Heather Stanich, 630-636-2366.

 

Auto Club - website

The auto club is for any student interested in learning about the areas of automotive that are not covered in classes.  In the club we learn about high performance, racing, restorations, modifications, and fabricating.  We meet once a week to learn about those areas in an informal lecture, discuss the automotive world, fix/modify the students cars, and to make improvements to our shop and auto program. B.I.O.N.I.C.

Believe It Or Not I Care is a student-led organization available for students who are interested in being support persons to other teens.  The goal of the group is to reach out to others in the school and community and give them a feeling of belonging.  Sponsors:  Dina Schnable, 630-636-2205 and Michelle Nevarez, 630-636-2236.

 

Book Club

Members of Book Club meet monthly to discuss a wide variety of books, giving each other reviews and recommendations. Many members participate in the Abraham Lincoln Illinois High School Book Award program as well as the Secretary of State Read for a Lifetime program. Calliope (Writing Club) - website

This is open to any student interested in any kind of literature and especially in creative writing.  Each year, the club publishes Calliope, a literary magazine for Oswego East High School, complete with student artwork.  Members of the club are also encouraged to submit their writing to a variety of writing contests, including the SPC Literary Festival. Cheerleaders* - Sports website

Cheerleaders are selected through tryouts in the spring of the previous year.  Varsity and frosh/soph squads are selected for  the football team.  Cheerleaders are to promote school spirit at athletic events, pep rallies, and other special events.   Sponsor:  Jessica Ziegler, 630-636-2237 and Jennifer Orwar, 630-636-2361.

 

Chess Club

Members of the Chess Club will study and develop skills for the purpose of competing informally against one another, as well as develop similar problem-solving skills with other strategy games, besides chess. Chess Club aims to ultimately compete at local matches. Sponsor: Justin Query, 630-636-2345.

 

Drama Club - website

Join in on the fall, winter, and spring plays. Audition for parts or stay behind the scenes. Sponsor:  Brian Fruits, 630-636-2388.

 

Environmental Club

Members of the Environmental Club meet regularly to maintain the school's recycling program and keep abreast of ecology, conservation, and social concerns.  Speakers and authorities discuss with membership various current and interesting topics.  Membership is open to the entire student body.  Meetings are every Thursday in G238. Engineering Club - website

The Engineering Club will be participating in FIRST Robotics with sponsorship from Caterpillar Inc. Aurora, IL. There are a variety of opportunities for student participation including- project management/tracking, web site design and updates, marketing and publicity, parts procurement and tracking, mechanical build team, electrical build team, programming team, and many others. Future Educators of America

FEA helps to explore teaching as a career option, providing a realistic understanding of teaching and encouraging students from diverse backgrounds to think seriously about the teaching profession. Sponsor:  Andrea Gardels, 630-636-2323.

 

Horticulture Club / FFA (Future Farmers of America)

The Horticulture Club/FFA is open to any and all students interested in horticulture or floral design.  Members become involved in a variety of activities related to specific holidays and seasons including fundraisers, sales, FFA competitions, and conferences.  Sponsor:  Cynthia Vick, 630-636-2302

 

Interact - Website

Interact is a service and social club open to all students. The club is sponsored by Rotary and carries out local and international service projects that benefit the community or school and promote goodwill. Interact meets Thursdays in the Community Room, 2:40-3:15. Junior Class

Mathletes* - Website

Mathletes is looking for competitive, energetic students! Students of all math levels and abilities are welcome. This year the team will be participating in an International competition each month without even leaving Oswego East High School! Mosaic Club (formerly Diversity Club)

Students meet to discuss issues of diversity and design activities to introduce students to various cultural groups within the school.  Meets Tuesdays, 2:45-3:30 in F132. Sponsors:  Jennifer Walker, 630-636-2359 and Natalie Sanchez, 630-636-2344.

 

National Art Honor Society*

Students who are outstanding in art their freshman year are eligible for membership into NAHS as sophomores.  The purpose is to inspire and recognize those students who have shown outstanding ability in art.  Meets every other Tuesday, 2:40-3:30. Sponsor:  Laura Cavanaugh, 630-636-2368.

 

National Honor Society*

NHS is a recognition program for high school students who show achievement in scholarship, leadership, service, and character.  Students are selected for membership by a five member Faculty Council. Candidates must meet the chapter's requirement for scholarship, service, leadership and character in order to be selected for membership.  Sponsor: Colleen Calvey, 630-636-2373.

 

Pom Squad* - website

Members of the Pom Squad are selected in the spring of the previous school year through a tryout system.  Membership is limited only to those in the sophomore, junior and senior classes.  Poms perform at football and basketball games as well as at student pep assemblies.  There is also a summer clinic and camp that students are expected to participate in.  Fundraising activities are a major aspect of being a Pom.  Sponsors:  Lisa Michaels, 630-636-2337, and Adria Stapleton, 630-636-2367.

 

Scholastic Bowl*- website

Membership on the Scholastic Bowl Team is made by the sponsor of the team.  Students compete in College Bowl format of competition against various other schools as well as the I.H.S.A. state series.  Sponsor:  Dave Carlisle, 630-636-2261.

Speech Team*

Speech Team is open to all students who wish to improve their public speaking and/or stage skills.  Competition at meets consists of the areas of oratory, oral declamation, prose, verse, humorous/dramatic interpretation, humorous/dramatic duet acting, extemporaneous, radio speaking and original comedy.  The season runs from November through February.  Sponsor:  Brian Fruits, 630-636-2388.

 

Spotlight (Vocal Jazz)*

Spotlight is a vocal jazz group which meets after school. We sing professional level music, and perform at school concerts, community events and competitions. Auditions for the 08-09 group will be held in May 2008. Sponsor:  Peter Barsch, 630-636-2488.

 

Student Council

Student Council is a service organization open to all students. It oversees a wide variety of school and community related activities such as student government, assemblies, homecoming, dances, blood drive, and fundraising projects.  Sponsors:  Kelley Hren, 630-636-2377 and Stephanie Scapino, 630-636-2388.

 

Wolfpack News/East T.V. 16  - website

Students involved with East TV 16 produce the morning announcements via live TV hooked up to all OEHS classrooms. Experiences range from camera operator, videotape playback, video switching, video editing, teleprompting, computer graphics, audio engineering and producing.  Students can work with either or both semesters. Open studios are on Tuesdays, 2:40-4:00.
