-Changes to the 2016 Standards (New: 4/30/2012)

On Thursday, April 26th, 2012, the NCAA Division I Board of Directors approved a one-year delay of the implementation of higher NCAA initial-eligibility academic standards.

The new academic standards, originally announced by the NCAA in October for the graduating class of 2015, will now be implemented beginning with the graduating class of 2016.

CoreCourse GPA software is currently being updated to accommodate this change. All updates will be completed on or before Monday, April 30.  Here are the highlights as they pertain to Division I.  Division II, at this time, remains unchanged:

1. Minimum GPA Raised to 2.30: Beginning with the the high school graduating class of 2016, the minimum core GPA for incoming college freshmen has been raised from 2.00 to 2.30. Student-athletes who graduate with a core GPA between 2.00 and 2.29 can still receive an athletic scholarship and practice with their teams, but cannot participate in game action as freshmen. A higher SAT/ACT sliding scale is expected to be released soon.

2. 10 Core Courses by Junior Year: Beginning with the graduating class of 2016, student-athletes will need to complete at least 10 of the 16 core course requirements by the end of their junior year.

3. Multi-Year Scholarships: Division I schools now have the option to guarantee athletic scholarships for more than one year. The guarantee would protect student-athletes from the loss of a scholarship due to injury or performance. Colleges could still revoke guaranteed scholarships for poor academic performance or behavioral reasons.
