Advisory Program

There are many themes throughout this work, but if one theme could be extracted that is overarching and paramount, it is a message that the high school of the 21st century must be much more student-centered and above all much more personalized in programs, support services, and intellectual rigor.

Overview of Advisory

Advisory provides a structure for guiding students toward self-realization and civic responsibility.  That structure is embedded in empathy and compassion.  Advisors recognize each student for his/her individual talents and interests and assist in identifying and/or creating avenues for honing and displaying those talents.

Rationale for the Advisory

It starts with the supposition that the adolescents we serve are trying to define their identities and place in the world.  This leads to our responsibility as educators to help them sort through information and answer questions associated with this endeavor.  If we provide meaningful opportunities for exploration and direction for our students, we can foster their ownership in this quest.

Advisory Defined

An Advisory is composed a group of students that meets regularly with a staff member (Advisor) to work on a variety of personal and global issues.  An Advisor gets to know a group of students, helps them identify their talents and clarify their goals, and guides them toward courses and activities that will help them achieve those goals.  Advisors celebrate their students’ successes and help them correct their mistakes.  They also assist students in understanding their place in the world and their responsibility in it.  In short, an Advisor helps a student navigate through high school by providing answers, advice and support.

Structure

  • Each Advisor has one group of approximately 15-20 same grade students in his/her Advisory.
  • Advisory is held every Monday for fifteen minutes after first block.  There may also be ad hoc meetings throughout the year to address issues or to promote school programs.
  • The Advisor and his/her students stay together for four years (freshman-senior year).
