English Department
It is the mission of the English Department to support the community in guiding students through their cognitive, intrapersonal and interpersonal growth. Students develop critical thinking and effective communication and literacy skills, while increasing cultural awareness. These skills will allow students to effectively apply knowledge to all disciplines and in a variety of situations.
English courses offer students the opportunity to develop the following English skills as related to the state standards: reading informational text, reading literature, speaking and listening, writing, research and language skills. The courses required for graduation will provide students with a solid foundation and opportunity to develop all of these skill sets. Elective courses focus specifically on one or more skill sets. The skills of focus are listed per course.

English Portfolios
As a part of our skills-based curriculum, the English Department uses portfolios to collect evidence of student progress in those skills. In each of our required courses (English 1, English 2, and English 3), students’ major projects, essays, and local assessments are placed into the English Portfolio to document progress and growth. Individual student portfolios are created during a student’s freshman year course. In the case of a transfer student, new students would create a portfolio during the first Oswego East English course.
These portfolios are housed in the English Department Office and in English classrooms. Portfolios are available to students so they may reflect on their progress and set educational goals; faculty may also use them to guide instruction and to make placement recommendations. Student portfolios are available upon student or parent request for at-home reflection. Once a student graduates or transfers, that student may keep the English Portfolio
