Theater Arts - 1 credit (2 terms)
Grades 9-12
Prerequisite: None
Lab Fee: None
If you ever wondered what it takes to produce a stage play
of musical, this is the course to take. Theater Arts starts
with an introduction to the stage including both the stage
itself as well as the actors on the stage. In the first term
the students examine what it takes to become an actor or
actress... from their pantomime skills to character
development to presenting full-fledged acting scenes.
Students are required to work on the school play either on
stage, or backstage for at least 10 hours. Crew or acting
work could be time spent before or after school or on
weekends. Second term students will look at how a director
works on stage. Their work will include analyzing acting
from the audience's or director's point of view. The final
project will be a student directed scene presented at the
end of the term. Students will learn how to direct, starting
with scene analysis, then moving from scenic design to
casting to rehearsing toward a final performance. Students
in class will work in groups to direct their final scenes.
Direction will take place in class as well as about 15 hours
of after school work.
