Finally, spring has arrived! It may feel too much like summer too soon, but we’ll take it after the winter we’ve had!

Academically Talented Program (A.T.)
Oswego District 308 recognizes students whose academic needs may benefit from differentiated educational curriculum to challenge them to reach their full learning potential. Grade levels 3-5 academically talented students are provided opportunities for extensions and enrichment of the district’s grade level curriculum in the areas of Reading and/or Math in an academically talented pullout program as well as in the regular classroom where they are placed in cluster groups. Students meet in a pullout setting of one hour a week for Reading and/or one hour a week for Math. The Academically Talented Program process screens students starting with a standardized achievement test (MAP) in which a student must score a 95% or higher in Reading and/or Math in order to go into the selection pool for possible identification. Second graders have the opportunity for the selection pool in the spring. Students in grades 3-5 whose scores are 95% or higher in either Reading and/or Math on the spring MAP test may go into the selection pool at that time. The next step of the identification process for all students in the selection pool includes an ability test (InView) and teacher checklist. Students identified in the spring for grades 2-5 are then placed in AT classes for the next school year. Please see www.oswego308.org website to read more about the identification process.
ELL Resource

Learning Disabilities Resource
The Learning Disabilities staff at Fox Chase provides individualized instruction in reading, language, and mathematics for students with special education needs. Students work in a small group setting, as well as receiving support from Special Education teachers during instruction within the regular classroom. Students also learn study skills, organizational skills and learning strategies, which helps them to develop independence in the regular classroom setting.
Rainbows
School social workers coordinate the Rainbows program. It is available free to all children, K-5th grades. Rainbows, a peer support program offered at Fox Chase, serves families who have suffered a loss due to death, separation or divorce. Rainbows is also helpful for children who are adjusting to a family change such as remarriage. New students are welcome to join Rainbows every semester. All students receive a letter describing the program prior to the beginning of each new semester.
Social Work Services
Fox Chase is interested in all aspects of your child’s development. In that light, the Social Work program attempts to meet the needs of the students whose social or emotional problems seriously impact their learning. Students are referred by their classroom teachers or building administrators and assessed for direct services as schedules permit. In addition, social workers meet student’s needs through the Pupil Personnel Services Team, classroom groups, parent and teacher consultation and crisis intervention services. Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher or the principal if you have concerns about your child’s social or emotional adjustment to school.
Title One Reading Services
Title One Reading and Reading Recovery are federally funded programs, which attempt to identify those students who are not achieving the reading skill level of their class as designated by state performance standards and the School Improvement.
The reading assistants of District 308 screen all kindergarten children. The Title One reading specialists screen all first grade students, all second grade students, some students new to the district, students who have previously received Title I reading services, and students in need of screening as requested by the classroom teacher.
Students in need of reading support meet individually or in small groups with trained teachers and assistants. Parents will be informed if their child is placed in a s specialized reading program. If children are placed on a waiting list, parents will be notified upon intake into the program.
Speech and Language Screening
The speech/language staff of District # 308 attempts to identify those students who are not developing communication skills adequately. Due to a change in state law, whole class speech and language kindergarten screenings will longer take place. Screenings will take place on a referral basis. Each school year, the District #308 speech-language pathologists will in-service all new K-5 teachers in the area of speech and language delays/disorders. Teachers, parents/guardians, and/or other outside agencies may refer a child to the school’s speech-language pathologist for a speech/language screening. Read more
