 Swim Lessons Frequently Asked Questions

Swim Lesson FAQ

How do I know if my child needs swimming lessons?
Children need lessons to learn safety skills. The most important skill is the “roll over and float”, a skill where your child will learn to roll to his or her back to get air, providing you with precious time to get to them in the event of an accidental immersion. Other skills, like swimming to the wall if they fall in, need to be learned as well.

Also, children need swim lessons to learn-to-swim on top of the water. Underwater swimming cannot save a life, and is the unfortunate cause of many drowning incidents in the US each year. Children tire quickly under water and trying to sustain underwater swimming can lead to drowning. Learning a good freestyle stroke with proper air exchange will help your child gain confidence in the water and may save their life.

How long will it take for my child to learn to swim?
It depends. Factors such as age, social development, and physical development can all influence learning of physical skills. It may take 20 or more lessons to learn the basic skills of floating, kicking, returning to the wall, and rolling to their back to breathe, as well as float and rest.

How do I know you have received my registration form?  Once you have registered and payment is received, you will receive a confirmation letter via email or mail.  If you do not receive one, please contact Jamie Fruits to confirm your registration personally.  The confirmation letter will include details regarding the facility, frequently asked questions and general lesson information.

Are there any requirements before joining?  Your swimmer must be potty trained and 3 years old in order to participate.

What happens if my swimmer passes level 4 during a session?  If your swimmer passes level 4 in the middle of a session, we will accommodate him or her in a level 5-10 time slot.

Where are you located?  We are located in Oswego East High School on Wolf’s Crossing and Harvey Road.  You may enter the pool by using Door 22 (it is on the back side of the building, past the drivers ed. cars and just before the Annex shed).

What should we bring?  Swim suit, towel and a positive attitude!  Goggles are encouraged once your swimmer has passed level 1; during level 1, we will ask that they do not wear goggles.  Delta Aquatics is proud to sell Finis Lane 4 Candy Shop Goggles for $8.00 per pair.  They are perfect for little faces!   We also ask that you tie your child’s hair back if it is long (it is hard to swim with hair in your face!).  We also sell Delta Aquatics Swim Caps for $3.00 per cap.

Can I stay and watch?  A parent or guardian must be present during all swimming lessons.  We have an excellent viewing area from our open balcony overlooking the entire pool.  We simply ask that parents stay off of the deck. All spectators must remain in the bleacher area during swim lessons. Please help us maintain a positive and distraction-free learning environment for all of the swimmers. If your child is left unattended before or after swimming lessons, we will notify your emergency contact.  If he or she cannot be reached, we will contact the police.

Can I pay with a credit card?  Yes, you can use our online credit card payment system.  Click on Pay Pool Fees under "Pool Information" on left menu bar.

Can I receive a refund on my swimming lessons?  Beginning August 1st, 2007, refunds will only be issued if a doctor's note is provided stating that the swimmer can no longer participate in the water.  Refunds will not be given for any other circumstance.

Will there be swim lessons during severe weather or road conditions?  Our program is in cooperation with Oswego School District 308.  If school has been cancelled due to inclement weather in district 308, lessons will be cancelled.  Make-up classes or refunds will be offered if class is cancelled unexpectedly.

What is your make-up class policy?  Due to the popularity of our program, our classes are always at capacity.  Therefore, if you miss a class due to a scheduling conflict or illness, you cannot make-up the class that you missed.

Did we miss your question?  Please call Jamie Fruits, Aquatics Manager.
