Superintendent of Schools Dr. Matthew Wendt, began serving District 308 on July 1, 2012.
Dr. Wendt has earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, Kansas; Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kansas; and Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas. Dr. Wendt’s doctoral degree was earned from the University of Arkansas, and his dissertation, which focused on teacher instruction and student learning, was named the 2005 Dissertation of the Year.
With over 20 years of educational experience, Dr. Wendt has served multiple public school districts in several states, including Kansas, Iowa and now Illinois. He began his professional career as an English teacher and athletic coach in 1990. He has served as a building administrator and as an assistant superintendent for teaching and learning. Dr. Wendt was appointed a Kansas superintendent at age 29, serving as the state’s youngest district superintendent at that time.
Dr. Wendt is the author of articles and other research focused on student achievement and school bond referendums. In addition to public school administration, he has taught undergraduate and graduate courses at the community college, 4-year college and university levels. Dr. Wendt has been a guest speaker and presenter at state and national conferences, and serves as a consultant to school districts challenged with increased student enrollment, boundary line adjustments and opening new facilities.
For the past 10 years, Dr. Wendt has remained an active member of the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD). In 2005, he was selected as one of the six national finalists for AASA’s S.D. Shankland Scholarship Award, and in 2006, he was presented with the Clyde U. Phillips Distinguished Service Award by Pittsburg State University. He is a member of the Illinois Association of School Administrators (IASA) and the Large Unit District Association (LUDA), a professional superintendent’s organization representing the largest school systems in Illinois.
Dr. Wendt and his wife, Dawn, a teacher of gifted education, have been married for 21 years. Dr. and Mrs. Wendt have two children: Ryan, age 19, and Rachel, age 16. Among his other activities, he enjoys serving with the local Chamber of Commerce, YMCA, United Way and other community efforts to improve the quality of life for others.
